During the Golden Age the Dutch had a lively trade with China and imported millions of pieces of Chinese porcelain. The Chinese workmanship and attention to detail impressed many. Only the richest could afford the early imports. After the death of the Wanli Emperor this trade was stopped and Dutch Potters now saw an opportunity to produce a cheap alternative for Chinese porcelain. This development resulted in an enormous growth of the Dutch pottery industry, and still Delft Blue is one of the key items of Dutch heritage.
